Darkness, we hear the Hungarian language, for us foreigners, as well as for Italians it is unusual, our ears haven`t used to Hungarian 25 minutes long dialogue. Live video material of an old gypsy woman, who is telling scary stories about her life and surviving in Budapest, makes you feel disgusted mixed with compassion for her and this minority. You feel desperate after the 26th minute of the dialogue. Suddenly, staging and play begins. I felt relief and relaxed after I saw that we are actually in that room, that video was taken place. Director put us in the room with the gypsy to feel all her pain, to see the interior of an old, small apartment that stinks of poverty and hopelessness. BUT. Apartment with memories, apartment full of necessary supplies, apartment of simple, free life.

I was fascinated to be there, inside that room, felt true deep compassion to the character, live with her one day.

Night, time of magic, people usually pass away during the night.

Day, clarity, change, everything is possible during the day. Day as a representation of life, representation of changes.

The amazing culmination of the show. 360-degree rotation of apartment. 360 degrees rotation of life. Absolutely joy from destruction and chaos of useless utilities. What is that apartment without family? What is a city without citizens? What is a planet without population? I think the main idea I caught.

Day after, night after, I met with one of the actresses, to approve or expose my guesses. Annamaria Láng in the role of Veronika Fenyvesi. Fascinating actress, by meeting with who, my satisfaction from spectacular has doubled. Interview highlights :

Daria: “ What is the base of the plot? Can you tell me any background story about gypsies in Hungary? ”

Annamaria:  “Out of 9 million ppl in Hungary, 1 million are gypsies, so it`s quite a big number, but they live on the edge of the society. 9 years ago there was a conflict when a white boy killed a gypsy one and it had a big resonance, but in the end both the killer and victim were gypsies. So that relationship and frustration between the Hungarians and the minority made this show exists. Now we live in a democracy, but it is not true liberty and we wanted to talk about it. Aggression makes aggression and then it`s growing.”

Daria: “As I understood correctly, there were some common features between two characters, one gypsy another one – Hungarian, do you agree and what do you think? Is there a parallel between the 2 characters? Do you think that it was a representation of the statement: Doesn’t matter where you are from, but matters who you are?”

Annamaria Lang

Annamaria: “I think it is disorientation in life and loneliness. Both of the characters needed some help, they both are lonely, they both have a lack of a partner in their life, both are very poor. Me, like younger ones, I`m raising a little son, the elder one has one as well. A similarity that I see: they both don`t get official help from the state, they try to survive. They have scary behaviour because they are also scared and if you are scared and frustrated- your answer is FRUSTRATION. Another thing, when the flat is turning upside-down, every object is staying in the flat, but in a different order. So it`s chaos. In their brain, you can find also chaos. They both are animals, who are willing to find something in life and no one gives them anything. Social undertone: single women with children, gypsies, and other minorities, are the weakest interlayer and who never would have any priority in society.”

Daria: “What were your first thoughts and feelings when you read a script?”

Annamaria: “First of all, when we started to work on this project, we have seen some documentaries about evocation, at that time it happened several times with people from Budapest. So, what we have is a storyline, not a script. But normally we work with writers, partners, and we need to put the flash on the bones, so we make improvisations, and then we have to start to work on the project.”

Daria: “Do you think that the show had enough impact on the international audience to understand your pain better? Because we are foreigners, we don`t understand the Hungarian language, so from my point of view, we couldn`t empathize on that level that you probably needed.”

Annamaria: “We play the show with subtitles. There is indeed a certain filter between the audience and the performance, of course, but I think the performance visually is very strong. There is a lot of silence in the show, so it gives you time to read text, but also be concentrated on the stage, on actors. I think this performance is a long-lasting one: you have to watch and you need to oversleep, then it will happen. It is not Shakespeare or Chekhov when you immediately feel something. It is a slow drill that goes through your brain. This is kind of torture when you watch it, torture with a lot of poesies.”

Daria: “Why this project is interesting personally for you?”

Annamaria: “It is important because it tries to bring questions about nowadays politics and social problems. It also tries to evoke empathy in the public, to think about those things, what`s going on outside, with those people, who would never come to the theater for example.”

Daria: “Do you think after this performance worldwide, articles, reviews, these people, who are main characters (gypsies), would come to visit the show?”

Annamaria: “I think there are some ways to reach them, but not in this way, they would not come to watch the show. It is not only about gypsies, it`s about listening and feeling empathy towards everybody around you.”

Daria: “You know I am also an ex-pat, and after living in China and Italy, a story that I have seen, touched my heart, since I also had some moments in my life where I felt like the main characters, have you ever felt it on you?”

Annamaria: “Yes, every day. I am a Hungarian actress who is based in Vienna. I live in Budapest, but I work almost every day in Western society, so I have this experience every day have this experience. I have a strong accent on the stage of a drama theater, everyone understands that I am a foreigner. And I need to explain to myself every day, why they are coming to see me on the stage, why am I so interesting for that audience.”

The story is simple, meanings are hard, and the only spectacular that touched my soul so deep for the last several years. Absolute delight.

Incredibile apice dello spettacolo. Rotazione a 360 gradi dell’appartamento. Penso all’idea principale che ho colto.

Meraviglia assoluta.
